I realized we haven't had a new cartoon in here since the now-infamous "p2tog," so here's a little in-progress something from the sketchbook.
This bubbled up during my trip to Los Angeles with John. Guess why.
I was already scanning it when I realized that perhaps the signs ought to be changed to "Solid," "Variegated" and "Self-Striping."
I'd apologize for putting an unfinished scribble in front of you, but maybe you could just think of this as an extremely short behind-the-scenes factory tour of my creative process. Don't forget to visit the gift shop before you leave. There's an entire section of discounted, slightly irregular sheep.

I like your freeway depiction...I'm from NY and now live in LA and it's so appropos.
Happy New Year to you! According to Crazy Aunt Purl it's supposed to be a fabulous year for we of the 1971 birth.
Best to you!
Is there a section in the shop for sock yarn? Maybe some of the sock yarn colony are ready for adoption, hmm?
you could always call it the new york freeweigh(t). just a thought.
i love it though!
oooh I like it just the way it is!
Very nice!!!!!

Love it! Nothing wrong with it, I like it the way that it is. Very funny.
I found your blog via The Yarnharlot's blog...omg! You are funny as all get out! I needed a good laugh tonight and found it here! Thank you so much...I am definately putting a link on my blog for yours.
I love it!!! Simplicity rules. Your comics are fantastic. Happy New Year to you, Delores, Harry B., and all your yarn.
(I can't believe I got my comment in this early--I'm 8th, not 98th! Yay!)
Love the cartoon. Stick with the yarn tags - they fit the vehicles so well. I'd love to see this appear in the shop sometime.
Thanks too for the factory tour - always interesting to see behind the scenes.
Slightly irregular sheep? They obviously aren't getting enough fiber!
Keep passing the open windows!
Awwww...the last time I saw this one was in my dressing room! Oh. Um. Oops
I, having absolutely no talent in drawing, always love seeing "the process" Did you see the Degas exhibit at the Art Institute many years ago? The man never stopped iterating the same themes, the same models.
Also, I just saw the Dolores Buttons you made for Amy Singer's new book. Hilarious!
Maybe the laceweight should be a bicycle lane. ;-)
It looks done and nothing short of hilarious!
I linked to your blog through the Yarnharlot. I just had to find out who "Franklin" was! I just read your story about how you got started knitting. I've never had a bad experience in a yarn shop but I certainly have met some rude clerks in fabric stores. I'll drop in to your blog again soon to see what you are making.
I wouldn't be so quick to discount those highly irregular sheep if I were you.
I like it!
Excuse me, where is the sock yarn?
Someone told me that there were balls of sock yarn in the gift shop shepherded by a sheep of all things.
Franklin,
Surely (don't call me Shirley!) you plan to share the chart for the littlest democrat, right?! We can't have all of these little ones going to Mommie and Me without a political proclamation now can we? Pleeeeeeease!?
At first I didn't understand what the problem was, then I read the caption. I think if you want to fiddle with it, work on the caption. I like it the way it is. The triple trailers are super bulky (1 stitch per inch) and the teeny electric car the Wii guys drive is cobweb laceweight(50,000 stitches per inch).
I love your cartoon! Please do more! You are talented. You should maybe query Interweave and some other knit-mag publishers:)
Ang
I agree completely that one of the knitmags should publish you...what a great idea that would be.
I know it bastardizes the name of the actual highway (the one that took you to Rhinebeck), but you could always change the caption to "New York State Plyway."
Most folks would probably think it was a pun on highway anyway.
Quite effective info, thank you for this post.
