Birthplace of Lopi

This was taken at Álafoss, a few hundred yards from the modern Istex mill where Lopi Yarn is produced.

Álafoss

In the early days of the industry, in the late 19th century, this river ran with naturally warm water. The raw wools were washed in it.

Today, the original mill building houses a shop that sells Lopi–including the famous unspun yarns that are put up in little wheels.

Footnote: Across the path from the shop is a former swimming pool that became the recording studio for the band Sigur Rós.

Before this trip I wasn't a fan of either Lopi or Sigur Rós. Boy, did that change in a hurry.

I'm so hating the fact that yarn itches and that I'm allergic. I want to go to Iceland (said with a high pitched whine).

Did you find that the lopi is coarse? I ask because I bought some lopi from Iceland to compare with my own Icelandic sheep's wool and I thought it was quite coarse compared to mine. I wondered if it was due to processing differences.

I love Sigur Ros--their music just makes me happy or mellow or both. As for Lopi, well, I actually have Icelandics myself...

Sigur Ros ("Victory Rose", I believe) are just wonderful. It's the kind of music that makes you just drift away and smile.

If you have time, take a tour of the separate Istex facility for sorting and washing the wool. Amazing. TONS of Icelandic fleeces. Yum!

Jonsi's solo work is not to be missed either! "not a fan of Sigur Ros?" Scandalous!

Lovely! The studio makes my heart sing, and the fiber, oh the fiber! What a beautiful place for Lopi to come from...

Oh I want me some unspun.

And those golds. Might have to dye something today.

I made my first completed project in Lopi. A friend has asked me to make a willy warmer in Lopi for him. He's a bit of a masochist.

I need to save up for a yarn-oriented trip to Iceland.

Enjoying your trip, and I love Siguir Rios. I can't understand a word they say, but their music is mesmorizing. There is an awesome DVD available from Netflix, or for purchase on Amazon. The scenery is amazing. I'm so jealous your in Iceland. I would like to move to Iceland.

I'm so enjoying your posts about this incredible place. I'll probably never get there, but I'm loving traveling vicariously through you.

Isn't the Istex unspun a trip? Kind of like knitting with cotton candy. (Don't try to eat it though, it'll felt. Ask me how I know.)

Franklin, loving every single one of these posts...have read lots about Iceland, including that Icelandic is one of the hardest languages to learn. What great photos!! Sheesh, if you move there, what will we do???

I love Sigur Rós. I believe that if I knew Lopi yarn I would love it as well. :-)

Now you've discovered what I've known for years, both about Lopi and Sigur Rós.

Glad you're enjoying your trip. Wish I were there with you.
