1,000 Knitters...Away We Go

Ladies and gentlemen, it is with the greatest pleasure that I announce the first of what I hope will be many open days for the 1,000 Knitters project: Saturday, July 14, 2007.

Sharon and Kathy of our own, dear Arcadia Knitting, have agreed to host the shoot in their shop at 1613 West Lawrence in Chicago (for more details about the location, visit their Web site). We'll begin promptly at noon and continue until ten minutes before closing.

I'm not going to ask for advance sign-ups, but depending upon the level of interest there may be a numbering system for participants so that nobody has to stand in line when s/he could be playing in the yarn stacks.

Those are all the details for now. If you're interested, just make a note on your calendar and watch this space.

If you can't make it on this day, don't fret. There will be others. And I am going to see as many folks individually or in smaller groups as my schedule will allow. I have finally got my own summer plans hammered out sufficiently to respond to the inquiries with firm suggestions.

Jeepers, I can't wait to meet y'all.

Baby Moment

Please indulge me as I present the latest photograph of my supernaturally cute niece.

Bug's Ear

It's almost disturbing, isn't it?

I've rarely seen cuter. What a great photo - that's not only one to keep but one to enlarge and frame.

Great news about the kickoff of 1,000 Knitters, too. Are you going to be posting the photos online, or do you have other plans?

That is one contented looking infant! Must be because she knows how much wonderful knitwear is in her future.

PICAdrienne said...

Oh, my gosh, she is lovely in lavender.

Good luck with your 1000 knitters project.

She is completely adorable!

I wish I were in your area to take part in the 1000 Knitters project! If you ever take it on the road to the Bay area, I'd gladly participate.

Oh, my heavens! So beautiful and content. Lovely photo. And best of luck on your new venture--can't wait to see you if you come to NYC.

Franklin, she is BEYOND adorable. What an incredible photo.

I'll be in touch with you at the end of July once I'm back in the states about the 1000 knitters.

In the meantime - keep these pictures coming!

She is truly beautiful, Franklin. She rivals my own darling Abigail(who's almost three now). Such a proud Uncle!!!

Tracey, in MI said...

she obviously agrees... as do I adorable.

Anonymous said...

She is beautiful. How appropriate that such an adorable girl has such a loving uncle. :)

Leslie said...

Lovely in Lavender... Is that an Uncle Franklin photo or is it just that she's so gorgeous any photo will look good?

Anonymous said...

"Supernaturally cute" pretty much hits the nail on the head.

Glad to read that 1,000 Knitters is having such a great launch party. I look forward to reading about it after the fact!

SoapDoc said...

OH. MY. GOODNESS. Too cute for words! And one of the most content faces I've ever seen!!

Congrats on the 1000 Knitters kickoff! That was sure quick :)

Anonymous said...

What an angel. I can see some smocking in that little girl's future. Just in case anyone is taking any bets on what skill you'll learn next.

Anonymous said...

If you think she's cute now, wait until she's about sixish months old and her little personality really starts to come out.

Of course, that's the thing about babies - each stage is always THE best, and THE cutest.

Anonymous said...

How about having your event at other shops around the city? I have a major issue with Arcadia. I refuse to walk in there place. Let's just say that I have never been treated by a store like I was treated by them...yes, it was pretty bad.

SheepsPyjamas said...

Elf is right -- what a wonderful little smile! I wish I could manage a sleep that contented...

That is a photo to make even those of us who swore not to do it again consider a reversal.

pacalaga said...

OMG, she is so cute. I wonder what she's dreaming about that makes her smile like that?

Kristy said...

Oh my gosh! She is really precious.

I know it was suggested that you seek sponsorship from knitting stores around the country to host photo shoots. Was that just a suggestion or something you might really consider? Drop me a line if it is a realistic possibility. I may have an opportunity for you in Northern California.

Karen said...

I just want to dip her in chocolate! Sending you good vibes for the successful completion of the 1,000 knitters.

Anonymous said...

That is one beautiful baby and she has attitude great combo

Jeanne said...

She's so cute she almost made my biological clock go off (and that takes quite a bit of effort, believe me). Don't you wish she was yours?

Anonymous said...

Now that's one cute kid! It's obvious that's she's figured out how great life's gonna be with her minions to tend to her every whim.

knititch said...

the 1000 knitters idea is so lovely. are you coming to copenhagen. i hear that stephen fry is pacing around in yarn stores here.....your niece is adorable and you wonder what they are thinking about don't you when you see such an enigmatic smile on the face of somebody that small. and then the fact that they have never been mean to a single soul...

Anonymous said...

bless her adorable little heart.

My two doting uncles were my heroes when I was a girl -- and I very nearly believe that nothing really awful would ever have happened to me if my Uncle George were still around.

Enjoy your unclehood!

noricum said...

Insanely cute!

Anonymous said...

Awww, so sweet!

I'll be there on 1000 knitter day, with bells on!

Anonymous said...

She smiles when she sleeps??? Amazing! Keep those pictures coming...I love seeing pictures of babies, especially such pretty babies. (And at least someone is taking pictures of their children...for more on that topic see my blog's reference to your post on 'mom guilt' (it's at www.lambandfrog.com).

Anonymous said...

the look on her face is the kind of thing that inspires people to write songs speculating on what babies dream about (The Barenaked Ladies have a good one in this genre). Adorable.

Michelle said...

She looks so comfy and happy. What a lucky little one.

Eileen said...

What a sweet punim (face). She looks like she's enjoying everything.

WOW the 1,000 knitters project is moving so quickly! Can't wait - I'll be there!

Such a funny little smile on your niece there! It makes me giggle.

(ETA: oh, blogger. I'm sorry if my comment shows up a bazillion times, Franklin...)

Bastille Day! Should be interesting.

Your niece is as cute as a baby could be.

Looks like she's having the sweetest dreams ever! How precious.

I think I can speak for the masses when I say that we'd be happy to indulge such lovliness on a regular basis. She is so sweet.

Oh my golly, will you check out that Mona Lisa grin! LOL

OMG; she looks like a pixie sleeping in a cup of flower petals
almost too cute to look at

Cheri said...

She is just so cute it makes me ache...they grow so fast! She is truly precious.

Anonymous said...

She is eerily cute! Baby calendar cute. Snugglywuggums cute. Impossibly cute. Etc.

Anonymous said...

She is way too cute!
Are you coming to Portland,OR during your photo shoot?

Anonymous said...

She looks like a little flower tucked into her dress petals. Gawd but babies are adorable, aren't they? Your niece is (of course) an exceptionally fantastic specimen. :-)

Anonymous said...

Holy Shit, she is cute. I realize that is a completely inappropriate choice of terminology for describing a baby, but sheesh, Franklin. I am surprised your camera didn't melt.

Anonymous said...

I've seen that expression before and I know exactly what precipitates it: She just figured out how to turn a heel.

LaurieM said...

Oh my! I cried out loud for the cuteness of her.

Anonymous said...

I know what she's thinking. She's thinking what a good family she picked, especially that Fabulous Uncle Franklin!

Congratulations Uncle!

Wow. Anne Geddes is pining to photograph your niece... I know she is. (She always finds the cutest babies in the universe).

Glad to read about the 1,000 Knitters Kickoff. Sad that I can't be there -- I'll be galavanting around Maine (but NOT stalking the supremely beautiful child).

Photoshop -- gotta be. Oh, Franklin. How gullible do you think we are? That level of cute is just not credible.

Anonymous said...

She looks so beautiful. What fun the photo shoot sounds. Wish it was international, too.

Mel said...

Are you sure there isn't a law against that much cuteness? Should any baby be allowed to possess that much power?

Dana S. Whitney said...

I didn't think kids could "pose" when they were that tiny. What a darling!
Have fun with the photos.

Please just post as many pictures as you want of that little Angel. She's absolutely adorable and we know you won't be having of yout own any time soon ;-)

i am also glad that you posted a pic of your beautiful niece...she looked like she was smiling and hugging herself.

Good lord, I have not a maternal bone in my body for all practical purposes, and I totally melted. Yep, she looks like she should've been a pre-Raphaelite model. You and the parents will just have to make up for the lack of painters with photos. ;)

Congrats on the start of the 1,000!

A cynic might believe that babies smile because they are unaware of the impending chaos and unhappiness that await them as they age. I prefer to think that babies smile because they choose to live in the moment and are mostly happy.

She's a sweetheart.

Mary said...

OMG! How can you not be moving to Maine to be with that little cutie?!

OMG, what a CUTE baby! The look on her face is precious ... like she's dreaming of knitwear, LOL. Or more like the hugs from her Uncle.

Nerdy Knitter said...

I don't think she could get any cuter--that outfit (even though it doesn't involve any knitting at all) just pushes her cuteness over the edge. SOOOOOO CUTE!

Anonymous said...

This beautiful baby has a very special uncle. I am jealous, but wait, I am also immensely greatful to be able to partake of your genius and compassion, your art and religion, yes your knitting ability, your writing and so much more. I feel blessed everytime I read your Blog and Website. Thank you Franklin.

P.S. I always think of you when I go to Harvard Square to the Yarn Shop. I know that was your stomping ground 10 yrs ago. Rita

That supernaturally adorable baby looks as though she is pretending to be asleep! Doesn't she? With that unbearably sweet smile on her face? Or am I jut babbling like a woman who is NOT going to have any more babies, dammit!

I am sooo not a baby person. I usually think human babies are quite unattractive, but that little girl is adorable! Mona Lisa smile....her parent's will have to beat off the boys (or girls)with sticks in 15 or 16 years.

Anonymous said...

What's disturbing is the wisdom of nature. The only reason for a baby to make that face is so that you don't leave them at the edge of the forest for keeping you up for 13 days straight.
Brilliant.

Yeah, what they said about that wee girlie! Just think of it, she's a 21st century woman! That's a smile of Anticipation if there ever was one.....run a refresher about your photo shoot, s'il vous plait? Peeps from outta town welcome, if they're "day trip" distance?

Lookit that smile!! She's gonna be trouble! (But in a good way!)

(delurking)

Franklin, I'm not a knitter, I just love your blog for your terrific sense of humor and your really gosh-wow excellent writing ability.

But that picture has me reaching for the needles I don't even own and don't know how to use! My entire subconscious is clamoring, "Must . . . Knit . . . For . . . Cute . . . Baby." I can only imagine what it's doing for the real knitters on your blog!

Jena said...

That is a great picture! You'd better watch out... too many cute baby pictures and you might turn into Kim Anderson or that dress-babies-up-like-vegetables lady. ;) :-P

If you are headed to MA at any point, give a holler. I'd be happy to sit for a picture and give you a tour of some of the non-Boston-non-T-accessible yarn shops (you know, west of 495) and give you a place to host a stream of knitters for photographs. (Provided it's not the week of the wedding or something, of course).

Stasia said...

I so totally dislike children, but that is ONE CUTE BABY - OH MY GOD! (And where can *I* find an adorable lavender gingham suit, hmmm?)

If you want a picture of a city knitter who went mental after moving to a farm where "things fall apart" you're welcome to stay up here in WI. We have prayer flags, we have sheep, we have yarn stash, and, thank God, we have a wine cellar.

Seriously, we're on the way to the Twin Cities, should you eventually schedule a shoot there.

Anonymous said...

What a cutie patootie! She looks like she's remembering something funny her dear Uncle whispered into her little ear. I for one won't get tired of looking at pictures of her, so, bring 'em on!! Good luck with your photo shoot. If you're ever in New York, you can count me in as one of your knitters.

Berry Gal said...

you are not indulging yourself with niece pictures but your entire audience! Please continue, seeing the pride and joy in a new generation fuels the future. Corny but true.... continue knitting on!

When I saw her picture, I jumped and laughed out loud with delight. What an expression!

As for the 1000 Knitters project, it is wonderful that it is taking off. I think we Canadians need to get together and figure out a way to get you up here - and not just to Toronto. The implications for Canadian unity if you only visit TO are too terrible to permit.

1,000 knitters - an amazing concept. I told my hubby about it and wishing we were closer to Chicago. His reply, "geez, with tickets so cheap - you should sign up! So, if you get to a point that you need a California knitter for your project, let me know, I'll hop on a place, knit a row and visit my non-knitter friend in Hoffman Estates!!
