At the Gay Rodeo, Part II: Cowboys, Cowgirls, and Crew

When I was at the rodeo there was a crew from the Travel Channel interviewing attendees for an upcoming series on gay travel destinations. I didn't realize at the time that the little queen interviewing me is a gay reality TV figure, from some show about a race or racing or something.

One of the questions he asked was whether "gays like rodeo because of the dress-up element." I said while it didn't hurt, it isn't the main point. A gay rodeo is not a circuit party. It's not about A-list gays posing in silly costumes. If it were, I wouldn't be there.

Not, mind you, that I am immune to the appeal of well-fitted jeans and cowboy boots. I just prefer them on the real thing, not a porn star or a gym rat.

I'd like to thank the crew of the rodeo for their patience and good nature. The area behind the chutes, to which I had access for the first time in making rodeo photographs, is crowded, busy and dangerous. I was very nervous about getting in their way, but they were equally concerned about helping me out.

Rodeo people are good people.

I love cowboys. They make me weak-kneed. Even gay ones. Sweet photos, Franklin.

I spent way too much time at jackpot ropings and rodeos married to the ex (decades)- I kept thinking I recognized some of those faces but it's probably the butts in tight jeans on sorrel horses that were familiar.

Growing up in Texas I attended many rodeos in my youth. I thought I had lost any desire to attend another, but this definitely makes me realize I want to see a gay rodeo!

I am going to look this up and mark it on my calendar for next year. I only live 40 mins from Fort Worth, so I have no excuse, right?

Thanks for the pictures, Franklin.

Was the interviewer a former contestant from "The Amazing Race"? Oh, I wonder who it was. One of the Guidos? Lynn or Alex? Hmmmm.

Love the rodeo pictures. It looks like such a great time.

Great pics, Franklin!

Rodeo - gay or straight - is so far from my day to day world...it's a treat to see it through your eyes.

...now, excuse me while I go back to your post and take another look at the rodeo dykes....

JoVE said...

And there are a shortage of dykes in the photos! But beautiful photos they are. I think they would look really stunning large on a gallery wall. Are you working on that? (Course then I might have to come to Chicago to see them...)

You know what I love about these pictures?

The people in them are having a real good time.

That's what they say to me. Nothing about being gay, cute asses, etc. Just people having fun.

Thanks for the pictures of the rodeo. Sadly I didn't get to attend this event even though I live here in Dallas.

I check your blog regularly and have never posted a comment to it but have to now. Awesome!

Cowboys make me swoon too! When I lived in Chicago I spent alot of time at "Charlies" bar. Alot of the men there were just into cowboy drag, but I still had fun looking just the same!

I love rodeos! I've never been to a gay rodeo, but rodeo is rodeo and I love the pics! It also makes me look forward to next summer's rodeos!

Was the interview guy Reichen from The Amazing Race?

I have been reading your blog for months and love it! I finally had to comment after watching the Gay Rodeo documentary on the LOGO channel last night... I remembered your posts about it and wanted to see if I recongized any of the men or women from the show. Low and behold there were Todd Tee Tramp and Chuck Browning in pic #20. I bet you had so much fun taking all those fab pictures. Thanks for always being so much fun to read.

It won't work in reality, that's exactly what I consider.

I have attended the gay rodeo in Calgary a number of times and I have to say, for the participants it was always about the rodeo and only incidentally about the butts! The participants were really serious about the riding, the roping and the rasslin' (of the cows). But it was also lots of fun to see the goat dressing competition.
