The Cavalcade of Completion continues with Mom's Möbius. It has the distinction of being the only thing I've ever finished twice. I gave it to her (off the needles, thank you very much) for Christmas, but have just added an additional 10 inches to give it the looser fit she prefers.
(Why yes, I do know that Christmas was in December and that it's now August. Would you like to step outside and discuss it?)
If you aren't familiar with the möbius you can read about it here. At the moment it's all I can do to recite my phone number, let alone explain The Riddle of the Universe.
These days I suppose Cat Bordhi is the name most associated with möbius knitting, but it's generally accepted that Elizabeth Zimmermann was the first person to work the concept into a design. If you check out Knitting Around (and you should, it's a delicious read) she uses it to create a scarf, a vest, and a jacket. This möbius is a descendant of Elizabeth's, and the designer gives her due acknowledgment.
Project: Magic Mobius
Designer: Susan Levin for Knit One, Crochet Two
Yarn: Douceur et Soie (silk/baby mohair) in colorway The Hell If I Remember
Needles: US8
Notes: I picked this out for my mother because she hates wearing hats (they crush her hair) and scarves (they bind her around the neck) and I worry about her catching a chill. The möbius, when properly worn, elegantly covers both those areas without choking or flattening, especially when knit up in something as feathery light as this yarn. And in spite of the light weight, it's surprisingly warm.
It's a very pleasant knit, a worthy variation on Zimmermann's original, and Susan Levin has incorporated a very clever edge treatment that doesn't interfere with the diaphanous look but does give the selvedges a little extra body.
Now you have no excuse, Ma. Put something on your head before you catch pneumonia. You think I don't know when you're cold?

beautiful. light as a cloud; you do your mom proud.
OMG, you sound exactly like MY son! Good boys like you are more precious than gold.
Lovely wrap, lucky mom.
You are just the second best son in the world. (Sorry, mine comes first, especially after his comment to me while shopping). I wrote about it today...
Seing all these FO worries me. Just to be safe, maybe you should start a few new projects to avoid knitting withdrawal syndrome... Either that or stock up on chocolate.

Lucky mom.....I love my mobius and I know that she will too.
Of course you know when your mother is cold. Just like she knew when you needed a sweater (she was cold!). It really is pretty. Maybe I should make one for me because I also hate hats and go out all winter without them much to the chagrin of my family.
This is truly lovely! Do you know any crochet patterns that may come close to this? (I know - crocheters are the bastard step-children of the textile arts.)
It's beautiful and your blog made me smile. Thanks, I needed that.
your mom doesn't look any happier now that its done. actually, she's looking a little pale...
;-)
Franklin, is that your bust of Barbara Walker?
That is beautiful, what a thoughtful gift. In my family Christmas gifts are often given in....well.....anytime in the 12 months between Christmas's! (same with birthday gifts.
I would call the colorway 'pinky fawn', but I suppose that depends on how accurate the rendering is. I'm assuming your mother will look a tad happier about the result than Her Majesty.
Says something about ol' Queen Vickie, she doesn't even smile wearing a breathtaking diaphanous moebius knitted by Franklin hisself? Mean, that's what she is. Question - is that one of the really-o truly-o knitted Moebius (moebii?) or is it knitted as a panel, then turned and joined end-to-end? I've been fascinated by those since I first saw one made out of paper, and I have seen that there ARE patterns for them - haven't tried one yet, though. And you? You're a Mitzvah of a son. A genuine Mitzvah.
Gorgeous! Gorgeous! Gorgeous! I made a similar one out of a heavier Mountain Colors pattern and yarn (same color way that you used :-)). Hats fit too close to the ear and make her hearing aid beep so it was the perfect solution. I sure like yours better though-much more delicate!
Now quit finishing stuff. You're setting the bar too high for the rest of us!
its beautiful and i love it! looks a lot like a shawl thing im working on from "charmed knits". okay, yeah, its another harry potter thing but its the invisibility shawl. light gray mohair, very warm. my first lacy bit. ive restarted it six times. what are you supposed to do when you drop a stitch within a gazillion row lace pattern??
i tried knitting for my winter gear resistant dad a sort of ribbed cowl. he loved it, said he would wear it and of coure never did. instead he got sick.
so... franklins mom.... WEAR THAT BEAUTIFUL WRAP YOUR SON MADE YOU!!
Your colorway just made me laugh out loud. Thanks for that.
I can't decide if the bust is queen victoria or beethoven.
I have been in a finishing mood myself this year. must be something in the water...
beautiful wrap; you MUST get a pix of your mom wearing it!
anne marie in philly
Your mom will look happier wearing that, won't she? The model looks like she disapproves strongly of scarves but must wear one because she's well-bred and must be polite.
Victoria is rather stern, isn't she!
:GASP: Lovely!
If she doesn't wear this, you can send her to us :) We'll convince her!
Beautiful! I'm sure Mom will love it.
I love it in the mohair! Beautiful color, too. Sadly, it's never cold enough where I live to need one of these.
What a lovely son you are, and I bet your mother is so proud. Still, I'm sure she is wonderful, too, from things you have written.
This has absolutely convinced me it is a MUST make -- I live in a cold weather climate, hate hats and don't like coats with hoods!
Off to find a pattern! M
Hi Franklin,
I so happy that you got this piece finished for the second time. Sorry you had to make adjustments to it. I loved it at Christmas when you gave it to me and I know that I will get a lot of use out of it once the weather gets cold.
Oh what a sweet post! Such a beautiful mobius...light and airy and full of love. :)
Franklin- If you liked EZ's books, the videos are even better. A wealth of information as well as a sense of humour.
The best mother and daughter team since the Edie Beales.
What a lovely headpiece, and won't muss the hair.
Exquisite! Your Mom is gonna love this. And if she doesn't, I'd be happy to send her my mailing address. Just sayin...
Oh, how beautiful. Now I want to make one, too! I can sympathize with having to "adjust" a made Christmas gift. I made a beaded bracelet for my husband's grandmother and made it too small, had to add a couple of inches. Took me, oh, about 5 or 6 months. But she did get it before the next Christmas.
It's gorgeous.
Oh, and Merry Christmas.
Miz Vicky looks stunning in it, even if she doesn't appreciate it. Dolores would use it for her take on Norma Desmond.
I think the color's Fawn. It's the closest one I can see on the K1C2 website to yours.
Your mama is one very fortunate person to have a son such as you!! and then there's your sister, and out-of-this universe adorable niece...oh my, how this fan does go on! Hope you Labor Day holiday is more holiday than labor, unless it's labor of love :)
Linda B
Absolutely gorgeous! Here's hoping it'll get me off the stick on doing a moebius for a friend. I've been thinking about it. For quite a while now. I supposed buying a pattern might be a start, since I want to do something a tad more elaborate than garter stitch.
Most strange, btw; I've got a helluva lot of yarn in my stash, all sorts of different colors, yet they all have the same color name as your yarn for this project. Isn't that odd?
That is incredibly beautiful. I've never seen anything that looks so lush and light and soft - it reminds me of a cloud. You must be one great son (and a fantastic knitter too) do to something like that for your mom.
I still have my black Mobius wrap (Berocco Bamboo ribbon yarn) on the needles. Only about 2 hours of work left to it but ooooh...so many other things I could do...
This wrap looks amazing Franklin. As always, you rock. What a lucky Mumsy you have.
I quit efrequqently use exactly the same colorway.
Oh, for Pete's sake. I really was completely sober when I typed that.
It's August, the goldenrod is in bloom, and frost won't be far behind!
Thanks for the inspiration.
Great colorway, I see it quite often in my knitting!
Very nice! You know, I love the name of that colorway, bet I may even have some in the stash. No one deserves Mo Mobius than mom:)
I hope your mother looks happier wearing the moebius than the model does.
Now I know what to do with my 2 balls of Douceur et soie.
I have just got to get me one of those bust things.
No, not one of *those* bust things....
Gorgeous! I'm sure momma will wear it with pride. Your model, however, is looking like she may need to add some fiber to her diet.
Oh, that is so lovely. I'm definately getting into lacy knitting more.
The merbius is truly proof that math is magic and that explains why I cannot grasp it with my merely mortal brain.
Say--is that Beethoven or Queen Victoria modeling that gorgeous wispy warmer? Can't tell from here.
Merry Christmas to your mom.
The Frog Princess
Victoria's just looking so cranky because she knows the Mobius is not for her.
I think it's lovely, even though fawn isn't one of my favorite colors.
It is lovely! Elegant, classy, just beautiful! You are so sweet--I hope my sons look out for me as you do for your Mama!
This is lovely, Franklin. Just lovely.
If your Mom won't wear it. . . could I adopt you?
I'll bet your mom will look quite a bit cuter peeking out of those beautifully soft folds than her Royal Majesty.
Your post made me miss my Mom and Dad, both are gone now. Lovely scarf!
It's like cobwebs, but in the prettiest way. Love the little nag at the end. Utterly charming.
I'm sure your mum will look a lot better in it than crabby old Queen Victoria!
Thank you admin
