Directions

In order to compensate, in part, for no longer being surrounded by this,

River at Thingvellir

or this,

I Miss You So Much

(click to embiggen; it's worth it)

I have begun working on this:

Vetur

It's Vetur, a lopapeysa by Védis Jónsdóttir, from Lopi 28. I left Iceland with a sweater's worth of yarn (thanks to Ragga of Knitting Iceland), and had thoughts of designing my own yoke. There's lots of other work on the table, however; and I decided following somebody else's instructions for a change would be a vacation in itself.

So I'm knitting Vetur as written, aside from changing it from the two original colors to four completely different colors.

Yarn for Vetur

And using Létt-Lopi (a spun yarn, with a finer gauge) instead of Plötulopi (which is unspun and slightly bulky).

And trimming some of the lower edge of the yoke, since I don't think a large yoke flatters a small person.

And eliminating the pattern from the body and sleeves.

And altering the neckband.

And making it a zippered cardigan instead of a pullover.

And working it from the top down instead of the bottom up.

Aside from that, I'm absolutely going to sit back and let dear Védis do the driving.

Whee.

  3. sounds like a good plan to me! :-) That´s the way I make lopi-sweaters too when following directions from somebody else!

  4. You follow directions like my husband cooks.

And it always turns out FABulous.

  5. Scrumptious colours!!

  6. I usually modify a design about as much as you plan to, and my local knitting friends all think I'm crazy.

Glad I'm not the only one like this.

  7. For a moment I thought you'd found the hunk in the sweater and were set to be working on him!

  8. My kinda pattern follower.

The design in the yoke looks like bunny heads. You should knit those in purple.

  9. What Katie K said.

  10. My first thought on seeing the pic was: he looks awfully grim for a man with bunnies on his chest!

  11. Happy return flight. Your photos of Iceland were eye-opening: no volcanic dust, no disgruntled mobs in front of the banks, but rather lovely yarns and landscapes. Thanks, as always.

  12. Perfect season for a pattern named "Winter". Speaking of which, will you be here over the holidays this year? It's been too long since we've seen you.

  13. You have a great way of following directions! It has to be the knitter in you.

  14. Eliminating the pattern from body and sleeves. Check.
    Zippered cardigan. Check.
    Altering neckline. Check.
I would have done exactly the same. Ever feel Lett-lopi next to your skin? Not comfy. So altering the neck is the best thing to do.
LOVE the colors you chose. Can't wait to see it done.

  15. But you bought the pattern, and will have it near you for inspiration.

  16. You chose really nice colors. I am very curious to see how it will turn out :þ

  17. Ditto Katie K-- The sweater sounds great but working on the hunk looks like way more fun! ;-D

You follow directions the same way I do. Does the guy come with the pattern? I don't think I'd need instructions for him.

    You are hilarious!

Make a swatch. My palms are already sweating because I don't think there is enough contrast in your colors. I made a tam once on 000 needles and when I was done you could hardly see the pattern - because even though the colors were different the tone (medium) was the same. I learned the hard way there is a reason while all those icelandic sweaters are in black and white - so you can see the darn pattern when it's finished!

  21. Anonymous - stop sweating. I already swatched.

  22. Is there any other way to knit? Also, the title of the post misled me when I saw the third picture, I was sure you were giving out directions to his house....
Look forward to your future sweater post.

  23. When you are done working on Mr. Stronginthejaw Margitson, may I have your leftovers? Oh, the sweater - you're working on his sweater. Silly me!

  24. Yer nuts. But I still love ya.

  25. My first thought when you said you were going to follow the directions was, "Really, you follow directions?". Then I kept reading and realized it was really Franklin's Interpretation of Direction Reading. Totally you!

  27. why stop there? i think side seam pockets, a turtleneck and a matching satchel with lace trim are in order.

    love the colors!

  28. Love what your are doing, YAY someone who wants to do this and make it their own. Love it. Will be excited to follow as I have some Harrisville yarn and a pattern for a pullover when I want a cardigan. Please keep us informed. So exciting. This will look so great especially the colors.

Just as I have composed a comment, complimenting how handsome you will look in that black and white sweater, you go off following a rabbit track! Who do you think you are, a knitter?

Ya, ya, I know, we all do it. So now we shall wait to see how beautiful it will be in the (lovely) colors you chose.

  33. I went looking for the bunnies and suddenly they popped out at me!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Ah yes, folks now always ask when I say I am going to take it easy and just follow the pattern --"Right Susan, so where did you make wee alterations?"

Way to go. Looking forward to this one.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hmmm, I do not think you know what this "following a pattern" thing means. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress!

  36. Cathy L1:28 PM

That is exactly the way that I 'follow' a pattern.

  37. When you figure out how to knit up the guy in the sweater, post that too!

Top-down will reverse the direction of the stitch arrows, and they will look even more like bunny heads.
