  2. I still have some of that stuff. Luckily, my MIL still thinks it's "in", so I can use it up with projects for her. ;-)

  3. This is totally true. And when there is a fire, sometimes the novelty yarns come up out of the sewer and they melt into acrylic blobs that ooze into dark corners of underground New York and devour derelicts and homeless people. Or, worse, they find their way to Mott Street where they reshape themselves into rip-offs of designer clothing, wait for tourists to take them home, and then suffocate them in their sleep!

Would a FDNY lieutenant lie to you about something like that?

  4. I note this only happens in NY sewers, never in Chicago! Of course, this stuff can still be seen worn by hip Midwesterners all over Chi town....

  5. oh, Franklin, thank you--needed a dose of yarn humor today! xo nan

  6. I knew that stuff would be trouble the first time I saw it.

Do the balls of fun fur absorb oil?
(I realize most of them are made from
petroleum products.) Wouldn't that be great? Send fun fur to the gulf...

I wonder if that stuff would be good for attic insulation...

  9. I've heard that fun fur is coming back into style! Yikes. Hope it's not the stuff from the sewers.

I taught my pianist to knit recently. She trotted off to Michael's or Walmart & came back, all excited, with....YES!I didn't have the heart to tell her. Best not to unnerve a new knitter, I say.

We're about 50 miles north of the city, so I guess the sewers there are safe.

  11. happily, my knitting career began once the decline of fun fur was well on it's way. I have wondered what everyone did with theirs though. Thanks for solving the mystery and making me chuckle.

  12. I actually have a apologize to some customers that come looking for it and I had none!

  13. I never made one thing out of fun fur. I missed the whole fad. It seems like it might make pretty good pet toys.

  14. Well I have to tell you I bought a knitting book recently, published in 2009, with what is surely a pattern for fun fur leg warmers, and probably vest as well. I haven't had the courage to go back and check in case it gets me.

  15. Hey, those pet alligator urban legends can hold truth. My father told me when I was 9 that he had an alligator that used to live in the bath tub and it got too big so he released it into the local river. I didn't really believe him until my 5th grade teacher said that there used to be an alligator in the local river (in PA) when she was a teenager. Legends also hold elements of Truth.

  18. I hear the alligators cough them up like hair balls.

By the way, I never could figure out what, exactly, is "fun" about this yarn.

  21. I don't know about New York, but I worked in a yarn store and I know for a fact that 1/8th of Canada's fun fur resides in a shed owned by my former co-worker.

I'm sure that shed has eaten someone, sometime...

  22. Hilarious images dance through my head!

  23. Hey! Hey!!!!! I love fun fur. In fact I'm making a log cabin quilt from it, ala Mason-Dixon.

I can't wait to finish. It will be like sleeping under a large acrylic bear. How sexy is that? I work up a sweat just thinking about it.

  24. that may explain the feral cat in my neighborhood dragging a small ball of fake fur yarn. One of the young'ns.

  25. LOL! I never thought about flushing my fun fur, I just pushed it to the back of my stash.

  26. Arrgghhh... I can't find the link to his email!!
I'm vacationing on the east coast, base camp is in Providence RI. I need to commune with knitters!! Where are they???

Maybe the city can host one of those "return your yarn" days, one Saturday per month to prevent returning the yarn to the wild.

Ya know, one ounce of prevention is worth five pounds of cure or synthetic fur balls or whatever.

  28. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! I didn't flush mine. It made me swear a lot, but I just donated it to Good Will. Clearly I didn't have good will toward the unfortunate person who buys it... but really, that's no longer my problem.

What about the single socks? Caught between possibility and the real, one a sock, their soul mate a pile of yarn?

  30. Hysterical. Most of my fun fur was a "gift" from my mother-in-law. I wonder what she'd say if I boxed it up and gave it all back. Or better, knit her an afghan out of the lot of it ;-)

So that is where it all went!!!

Off Topic. Franklin, I'm very curious about the status of the 1000 Knitters project! Any information you can share? Thanks for always entertaining and informing.

  32. What really annoyed was when customers rushed to buy someone else's fun fur knits and ignored the good stuff, i.e. mine - NOT FUN FUR.

    ReplyDelete
  33. What?! Fun fur isn't in anymore! NOOOOOOOO!!! (jk)
