Author Alert

Carol's Awesome BookThe house is all a-twitter at present because we're having company: my friend Carol Sulcoski, whose splendid book Knitting Socks with Handpainted Yarn is presently perched at the top of the charts.

Carol's going to be at Loopy Yarns tomorrow (Friday, the 16th) from 5:30–9 p.m. signing books, and if you have handpainted yarn languishing in your stash (and who doesn't?) come over to meet her and get your hands on a copy.

It's been quite some time since we've had overnight guests and I'm afraid this little auberge was found to be sadly in need of a wash-and-brush-up. Harry, brave soul, has spent the better part of the afternoon in the freight elevator, moving Dolores's empties downstairs to the recycling bins.

Speaking of great messes, I must dash. There are still dirty dishes in the sink, and I must explain to Dolores that Carol will not be sharing her cushion tomorrow night. The money she spent on new satin sheets, rose petals and pillow mints will be for naught, but there are certain things up with which I will not put. This is a respectable establishment.

Or so I keep telling myself.

By the Way...

I've just found out I may have a chance to visit Raleigh/Durham/Cary, North Carolina late next month. If I do go, I'd love to work in a signing and/or a class. If you have a favorite shop in the area, wouldja please drop me a note at franklin at franklinhabit daht cahm? Thank you kindly.

  1. Please PLEASE come to Maryland. After the inauguration and life gets back to normal - whatever that is!

  2. I got your book as wonderful Christmas present and bought Carol's book for myself (since no one gifted me with it) Laughing and knitting are two of my favorite things so between the two of you I'm in good shape!

  3. Heh, never thought I'd see Dolores and "respectable" in the same paragraph.

If you make it to NC, I'll try to get my sister to track you down. She's in Durham.

  4. Charlotte is so much better than Raleigh. But I digress. I hope you enjoy it!

  5. I can only imagine that with all the money you got for Dolores's recyclables that you & Ms. Sulcoski are out painting the town red and partying like 2 sailors on leave.

I'm in Charlotte, not Raleigh, but SO excited with the thought that you'll be relatively close! Please keep us updated.

  8. I'm wondering why you don't ever have the chance to visit Iowa, especially Iowa City. Not exotic enough for you? Is it the weather? We have both a nice book shop for authors to read in and 3 very nice yarn shops, too. Take your pick. One makes yummies and such.

I got your book for Christmas, and apparently my mom read it in it's entirety before gifting it to me, because she said she was laughing so loudly that my father came upstairs and yelled at her to be quiet. She really enjoyed it, but I haven't had the chance to yet!

  9. Franklin,
Love, love, love your blog. And I really appreciate your use of "up with which I will not put" -- one of my all time favorite quotes.

P.S. When are you coming to Los Angeles? It's 75 degrees today.
    :-)

Gave "It Itches" to several fellow knitters for Christmas. My best friend thanked me with the following: "Thanks for the knitting book. What a riot! The kids were annoyed because I was always laughing out loud. Made it all the better. "

Now to look at that handpainted sock book ...
    Cheers!

  13. I live in Boston, but I've been to Great Yarns in Raleigh. (You were great at the Common Cod mtg. by the way.) Great Yarns carried an exclusive line of Julia by Kristin Nicholas that I just had to have at the time. Here is their website: http://www.yarnsetc.com/
I hope the trip works out for you.
    Good luck.

And 80+ in the valley! And I'd have to say that I'm sure A Mano Yarn Center would be the perfect place!

Raleigh is nice this time of year. No snow!!

I live in Raleigh and was in ME over Christmas when you were in Bath teaching classes but couldn't get away. I'm atwitter that you might come here.

There's an active community of knitters and some lovely yarn shops here.

  16. Are you still coming to Michigan next week? Bring us some warmer weather, please!

Verification is pheance, some sort of seance?

  17. I've only been the Shuttles, Needles & Hooks in Cary. Wild and crazy store and I love it. The owner of Great Yarns in Raleigh used to own a shop in my town...lovely lady and I hear Great Yarns is a wonderful store. Please keep us updated about where you're headed!

Etheline, my daughter's pug, will not come out from under the covers due to the brrrrrrrr cold Chicago weather. It's a teeny bit chilly for us here in FL but it's still warmer than where YOU are.

Sooooooooooooooooooo, won'tcha come to FL, specifically to the West Coast, Sarasota area? We've got beautiful beaches for Dolores to sun herself on and plenty of crazy nightlife for her to enjoy. OK, I'd even travel to Orlando if Mickey is your guy.

Oh, and have a blast with your friend.

  20. Oh, please do come to NC. No snow, Southern hospitality, adorable accents! I'm in Fayetteville, but it's just down the road - just let us know where & when, and I'll alert the local knitters. If you are up for ad rive, BElla Filati in Southern Pines would probably love to host a signing! (In fact, I'm going to email them about it right now!)

That Harry, cute and good at cleaning!

"there are certain things up with which I will not put." Love that.

Thanks for the tip on the book. I was just looking at some handpaint this a.m. (looking for something else of course while being late for work...) and thought, "someone, somewhere, has got to have had something to say on the best way to use this stuff in socks." Thanks for listening in and sending the answer!

We're thawing out up here, come on back! Ok, just read Lynda the Guppy, I guess I'd lose the temperature competition...

  22. Her book looks lovely (and I need it).

I finally got my own copy of "It Itches", and it's wonderful. PLEASE do another, I want that Santa cartoon!

Don't know about the Carolinas, but if you ever get to Rhode Island, stop in at Fresh Purls in Providence! It's literally blocks from my house. =^..^= (Though I would certainly make a trip to Boston if you land there for tea...tell Dolores that she can probably find "tea" there as well, the kind that they served during Prohibition, anyway...)

How wonderful that you might come to Raleigh! Sometimes we Southern knitters feel so neglected.....

YarnBirds in Raleigh is a great new shop with a warm and welcoming staff and comfortable couches. not to mention great selection of yarn...

If it weren't "OMGCOLD!", I'd drive down tonight just to get my hands on a copy of that book and meet Carol! Darn weather!!! Keep warm and Enjoy!

I lived in Raleigh, NC up until 3 years ago. Shuttles, Needles and Hooks in Cary is a wonderful place. An old house stuffed to the rafters with yarn.(2 floors!) Lots of nooks to find surprises in.

Great Yarns had nice selection and a great baby sweater class. But the local scuttlebut among knitters from 3 years ago was that the sales staff was snippy. Perhaps they have mellowed. And there is a great local bookstore (Quail Ridge Books) in the same shopping center. If nothing else, show up there and offer to sign some of the store copies. They seemed to have lots of author signed books.

Oh please, yes, come to Raleigh! I've left a Ravelry messsage for you with more ideas. Pay no attention to the remark that Charlotte is better than Raleigh. I will not subject you to any genteel Southern hair-pulling, but she is wrong, bless her heart.

Please come to Raleigh/Cary! Great Yarns in Raleigh, and Shuttles, Needles and Hook in Cary, as already mentioned by others. There are also several SnB meetings that would love to have you!

  28. I think you should say, "hi, ya'll" in Raleigh then head over to Winston Salem where we will welcome you to Knit Picky Yarn Shop!! Winston is full of old world charm & history. We're located in the heart of the NC wine country. And we have such a fun time at the shop!! We promise to show you a good time.

  29. Hi- so Shuttles etc is lovely but there was that yard full of McCain signs....( Oh, and an Obama campaign outpost right across the way)Yarns Etc in Chapel Hill might be nice(they're friendlier since they expanded) Cozy(malabrigo land) and the Fiber Loft in Durham are small but lovely. Looking forward to you coming. Also a plug here for Quail Ridge Books in Raleigh and the Regulator in Durham- both fab indy bookstores..

  30. Newly renovated Gate City Yarns in Greensboro has lots of room, sells your book, and has great ambiance and a killer bakery next door-- and then you'd get all the knitters from the Triangle and the Triad together!

Oh yeah, Carol will come and see you, but will she travel out into the boonies to have an espresso with me??? Oh no!!!

Have a grand and wonderful time!

  32. I agree with Phebe about Yarn Birds on Falls of the Neuse Rd. Especially since it is the only store in the area that has the most space. The others would be simply too crowded.

I just visited the store for the first time a couple of days ago and I loved it. it was inviting and warm, with a very welcoming "come hither to knit" knitting area. I think you should check out this store.

Another vote for Knit Picky in Winston-Salem, NC!

  35. Be still my heart. I'm all the way over in Asheville, but will do whatever it takes to get to Raleigh. BTW, my daughterinlaw lives in Chapel and just posted that it is 70 degrees an sunny this weekend. That's Raleigh for you!

  36. Please please please please come to the Raleigh area or I would even settle for anywhere in the state of North Carolina. I have read your blog for years and I bought a copy of your book at Barnes & Noble as soon as it was on the shelf.

Yay! Please come to the Raleigh area! The yarn shops I am familiar with are not really conducive to signings, - not enough space, but Quail Ridge Books (my favorite independent) in Raleigh has authors in every week for signings and it is in the same shopping center as Great Yarns.

  38. Hi Franklin,

First, let me say that I’m a huge fan of your posts. You’re on my List Of Ravelry Favorites, and I often share your stuff with my knitting friends.

I am writing everyone on my Favorites List with a couple of questions. If you can answer them for me, it would be a HUGE HUGE HUGE favor. Really HUGE.

Thing is, I am writing a piece on Ravelry for my college magazine. Topic is WHY Ravelry is such a huge success. I need opinions from fellow Ravelers like you to back up this claim I am making.

    These are the questions:

    1) Why did you choose to join Ravelry?

    2) How did you learn about Ravelry?

    3) What does Ravelry give you that other sites don’t?

    4) Absolutely anything else you’d like to share with me on this subject.

My quandary is this: I love the site and come here almost every week to look for knitting tips and ideas. (I haven’t joined yet, as I am too shy to talk of my own work…)

I want to understand why others do the same. Each person must have his or her own reason and I am very curious to understand this trend.

Once I write the piece, I intend to send it across to Bob the dog. Maybe, he will post it on the site to encourage newcomers or even use it for other promotion purposes.

    Thank you in advance

Keep writing, keep sharing, keep creating
    Warmest regards
    Cynthia

  39. Franklin,

I like Yarns, Etc. in Chapel Hill, NC. Also Cozy in Durham but the space is a little small for an author appearance. That said, you could do a signing at our lovely independent bookshop a block away from Cozy and then do an appearance at the yarn shop. We'd love to have you in the hood. Keep us posted.

Oh! It would be great to have you in Raleigh/Durham. I know you've heard about some of the places to go, but I would suggest the Hillsborough Yarn Shop. Hillsborough is a mere 25 min or so from the RDU airport and 10 min from parts of Durham. Let me know if you need help with anything.
