I have two drawings due at Interweave tomorrow morning. I'm supposed to spend the day at the drawing board, living on handfuls of granola and pausing only to pee into a bucket. So don't tell them about this, okay?
I finished knitting the three pieces of Abigail's Norwegian pullover earlier in the week. This morning, I felt compelled to wash and block them in preparation for sewing and cutting the steeks. And then I felt equally compelled to take a picture and show you.
I'm happy I decided to try out this sort of sweater on a small scale. It's fun as a barrel of Viggos, but I definitely need practice. Though my colorwork is fair-to-middling, there are passages I wouldn't want to submit for examination by a panel of feisty, armed Norwegians.
Alrighty, I'm going to go back to the drawing board. And if you squeal to Interweave, I'm sending Dolores to your house to deliver a lavishly illustrated lecture entitled, "Mary Had a Little Lamb: Fetish, Sensuality and the Erotics of the Modern Sheep" to your children.
I love the sweater! I also love the color choices. So cute! Girly without being pink. Can't wait to see how the steeks come out. I am fascinated by sweaters done this way!
ReplyDeleteA barrel of Viggos, huh? Well, I have been thinking of taking the plunge in a small way, that would certainly push me over the edge. And, I am certain that working with yarn and knitted items was conducive to producing ideas for drawing.
ReplyDeleteThere are times when only a screaming Norwegian will do....
ReplyDeleteWell the kids are up and grown but I can always use new ideas and suggestions. Does she bring a tall handsome male with her for practice after each chapter???
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I'm not the only one who blogs when faced with a deadline ;)
ReplyDelete"fun as a barrel of Viggos"? As in Mortensen? Perhaps as Aragorn...hmm...could be fun!
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, that yarny thing is cute too.
OK, I won't tell Interweave...but can I have Dolores come and deliver her lecture anyway? My "children" are 36, 40 and 42 - they'll LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteMy child would probably find the lecture quite amusing. :-)
ReplyDeleteLove the sweater. If the Norwegian is screaming loud enough, chances are good that he/she will not look that closely at the knitting.
In my limited online experience, Norwegians are so thrilled to see knitters keep their traditions alive, they forgive all sorts of foibles in proper technique.
ReplyDeleteGreat job there! Abigail will be even cuter than usual in it.
(sung in the go-go's voices)
ReplyDelete"our lips are sealed!"
can't wait to see the sweater all put together! and it will be beautiful!
Love the Norwegian Pullover, Frankln. As luck would have it, I'm making a circular yoke pullover at the moment and was thinking about adding some "lice" at the bottom of the yoke, and your pics really inspired me. Think I'll do a wide-ish band of those as I'm starting the pattern...whichever pattern I end up using! Did you design your own?
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking you're safe from the harpoons. Great colors. Abigail is such a lucky girl.
ReplyDeleteAnd isn't it wonderful to have someone tiny to knit for? Projects go so much faster! Practically guilt-free.
I won't breathe a word, but would you send Dolores anyway? I'm sick of unpacking around here...
ReplyDeleteHjempefint!!
ReplyDelete(both the sweater and the thought of a barrel full of Viggos...)
Lovely..I'm with Dale-Harriet... my kids would be greatly entertained by the Erotic Sheep Fetish tome. (Can't wait to see who gets herded to your blog via search terms...!).
ReplyDeleteWe won't tell InterWeave.
"...a panel of feisty, armed Norwegians." Left me with an image of the opposite - a group of Norwegians, sans arms, trying to balance as they peer over your sweater....
ReplyDeleteIs this the part when you lie down in a darkened room with a cool cloth over your forehead? (As a prequel to "the cut"....a la Elizabeth Z)
ReplyDeleteErin
I won't tell, I promise. Delores can still come over, but we'll get her drunk before she does her talk...
ReplyDeleteAbigail is so lucky!
ReplyDeleteI just presented my nephew's baby boy with his first pair of handknit socks...I've got a LONG way to go before I tackle even a simple sweater. Wow.
"It's fun as a barrel of Viggos..."
ReplyDeleteQuote of the day, m'dear. My newly pink hair and I love you.
Feisty Danes would be OK then? ;)
You do know, don't you, that your editor reads your blog? So don't go blaming us for the fact that you're busted, mister! I'm thinking *you're* going to have to sit through Dolores'lecture. I suggest you prepare yourself with drinks and (simple) knitting.
ReplyDeleteNow I wish I had children for Dolores to lecture!
ReplyDeleteIf those feisty, armed Norwegians show up, never fear. I hear they can be tamed by judicious but liberal application of aquivit. Or you could sic Dolores on them.
ReplyDeleteMy kids are all grown up, so send Dolores right on over. We'll party all night.
ReplyDeleteSheila Z
I am such a philistine... I have no idea what viggos are. But Viggo M... he's a hottie. Anyhow, I finally got a pic of that pig Elizabeth, she's posted on the blog now. You should probably send Dolores up to that barn for a little straightening out... get all the critters in line.
ReplyDeleteOh.come.on. Is ANYTHING as much fun as a barrel of Viggos? I think not. Seriously.
ReplyDeleteLooks great from here. In watching Knitting Around where EZ and MS were discussing the "lice" stitch, Meg was talking about being careful with the pattern cause she didn't want to "louse up her lice" and she and EZ had a good laugh. Such a strange name for a pattern, lice...anyway, thought I would share!
ReplyDeleteMy first attempt at stranded color knitting was an IK pattern for snowflake socks. They actually came out pretty well. Well, I say "they" knowing full well I have yet to finish the second one. The sweater for Abigail is really adorable. You'll have to buy her an American Girl doll to wear it when she's outgrown it.
ReplyDelete"...I'm sending Dolores to your house to deliver a lavishly illustrated lecture entitled, "Mary Had a Little Lamb: Fetish, Sensuality and the Erotics of the Modern Sheep" to your children."
ReplyDeleteSnort!
I had a nightmare once that I had to give a lecture on some really dirty erotic stuff to a group of nuns...and the nuns kept asking really detailed questions about the naughty bits. I always meant to bring it up with my therapist, Sr. Mary Patrick, but I never seemed to talk about much besides my inability to express myself openly and honestly.
Oh -- answer your e-mail. Or have you gotten an interweave.com address and left us little people behind? Kisses.
A barrel full of Viggos? Modern ovine erotica? Your prose suddenly went from purple dinosaur to "Purple Rain"!
ReplyDeleteThere's a thought -- Dolores as "Darling Nikki"!
Gorgeous! I love it! :)
ReplyDeleteHaving just done a pair of fair isle legwarmers for our daughter - think I can safely say your colourwork is at a much higher standard. You're just picky, is all!
ReplyDeleteOh for a small addition to the family so I could try out techniques on small projects! Otherwise it's all socks & mittens. & the spring is really springing here today.
"And if you squeal to Interweave, I'm sending Dolores... "
ReplyDeletePromises, promises!
Instead of Dolores can you send a barrel of Viggos?
ReplyDeleteBeautiful sweater, that little girl is very lucky to have a wonderful uncle like you.
If Mary had a little lamb, she obviously has achieved ramming speed.
ReplyDeleteA broken down harlot named tupps
Was heard to confess (in her cups)
"The height of my folly
Was wooing a collie,
but I got a nice price for the pups."
See, everyone seems to be thinking of Viggo M., but the first Viggo I thought of was the evil guy in Ghostbusters 2. Cause to me, he's definitely a lot of negative fun.
ReplyDeleteBut the sweater pieces look really good. Let me know if you need me to come over with chocolate/beer/hard liquor when you're cutting for the steeks.
Hee Hee. I don't have children and the lecture sounds interesting...
ReplyDeleteMore fun than a barrel of Viggos? Does Stephen Fry know he's been passed over by Aragorn?
ReplyDeleteKeep your eye on that bucket instead of checking the comments! You are hilarious under pressure. Sweater is sweet!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful -- and steeking is almost as fun as a barrel of Viggos! Speaking as someone who is married to a feisty, armed (just 2) Norwegian, I don't think they'll be doing any criticism of that lovely work.
ReplyDeleteMy four year old looks forward to it. The two 1/2 year old just belts out BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.
ReplyDeleteright MAAA?
Sure sweetie, but I'm sure Dolores has a vocabulary on ma's bad days... and more.tolian01
What about a barrel of Jans and Svens? Beautiful sweater.
ReplyDeleteSorry Dolores, but I've been in graduate school since 1992 (OK, not continuously)--I heard that lecture some time in 1998. I expected better of you, young lady! ;)
ReplyDeleteI am blessed with nieces and nephews that will a) only wear orange or b) will only wear a color that is complementary with brown.
ReplyDeleteThe orange ones tend to look like traffic cones, but they are young and have strange skin tones that make them cherubic in orange.
The brown-lovers tend toward the muddier/saturated colors like you've chosen for Abigail and I adore them.
By the way, when you said a barrel of Viggos - did you mean Viggo Mortensen? (especially when he was all scruffy and unwashed in LOTR)
Sounds like an interesting read -- and since I don't HAVE kids, I am telling!!! Will email my address for the big "D" :)
ReplyDeleteLOVE the sweater!!! Steeking is something that makes me quiver -- but doing a child sized version is brill! Thanks for the idea.
So what are you going to do if Abigal ever moves someplace too warm for sweaters? ;-)
ReplyDeleteThat's adorable! I love the colors :)
ReplyDeleteI don't have kids, and I think my husband would gladly read the erotic tales of modern sheep (mostly so he could make fun of me).
ReplyDeleteYes, I also am prone to starting a new project or two or three or four in response to some other different project's deadline.
ReplyDeleteLove the sweater. But I'm calling Interweave as soon as I finish this, and my 24 year old son is really looking forward to Delores' arrival.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the sensible critique. Me and my neighbor were just preparing to do a little research on this. We got a grab a book from our area library but I think I learned more from this post. I'm very glad to see such excellent info being shared freely out there.
