Call Me Uncle

Abigail Ann was delivered today, wriggling and dancing, at 10:36 a.m. Eastern Standard Time. Parents and baby are doing fine. Susan made it through the whole thing without anaesthetics. Abby weighs 7 pounds, 15 ounces and has dark, wavy hair. 19.5 inches long. Ten fingers, ten toes, and all the rest presumably in order.

After she was born, she was given to Susan and started nursing in a split second. Typical of our family–upon arrival, the first thing she wants is lunch.

At what point do you suppose I will stop jumping up and down and grinning like an idiot?

This just in! Pictures!

Miracle

I see Grandma Ann made it through the experience with her manicure intact. I'd recognize that shade anywhere. Way to go, Grandma.

  1. Hooray! Congratulations! I can say from much experience that aunt-hood is the best thing ever, and I hope it's the same for you & uncle-hood! (My husband offers one piece of advice: at some point, before she's old enough to climb you like a jungle-gym, get kneepads.)

  4. Never, my dear! A child brings special joy forever... lots of dirty diapers, too... but that's beside the point!!!

Many hearty congratulations... you will be a superb uncle!

Woohoo! Delurking to celebrate with you. A good birth, and off to a roaring nursing start. Hooray Abigail! Lunch is a lovely way to start the day...

And congratulations to Uncle Franklin, Mom, and all. Looks like Abigail chose her family well.

Congratulations! That's lovely news. Good to know that mum, baby (and presumably dad!) are doing so well.

Auntiehood is great fun, all of the fun non of the mess. Unclehood can only be as fab :)

  10. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    And hugs to all!

And about the jumping thing -- perhaps NEVER! Having one of each myself, I can say nieces and nephews are the BEST! Especially when you don't have little ones of your own (I am speaking of myself here -- but I know for now you're in the same boat!)

I am sure she will love you as much as you love her and you'll always be putty in her hands :)

Lucky child to have such a wonderfully loving Uncle! I am thrilled for you, Franklin!

  11. Delurking too. YOu will hopefully never get over that excitement. Babies are delightful, and toddlers are more fun. Once they hit the teenage years, you are glad that you are only an uncle.

  14. Whew! Well, she took her time getting here, but first babies are like that.

I'm so glad mother and daughter have come through the experience unscathed. I wish both of them good health and a bright future for the little one.

    Abigail is a lovely name.

Congrats. You can jump and grin all you like. Abigail Ann is such a lovely name.

(P.S. they mostly don'T give anaesthesia for child-birth. More like hallucinogens to keep your mind off it. You can't sleep; it's too hard work. that's why I didn't want any.)

And one of the best parts about being the uncle (or aunt) is that you get to spoil them and be the 'cool' adult.

If you are lucky, you never lose the feeling. I am still besotted with my nephew (and his daughters now) 32 years later.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Aw, what a little cutie she is! Congratulations, Uncle Franklin!

    ReplyDelete
  34. What a great baby! Full of gusto! My favorite parts of babies are the "toe-peas". If you look at the bottom of their feet when they curl their little toes... toe peas. They're quite tasty too!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Congratulations, Uncle Franklin!

The nail polish looks familiar to me, too. At the risk of offending Grandma Ann, is that OPI's "I'm Not Really a Waitress," or something with a classier name?

No matter. Best wishes to your family!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Aww..congratulations!

The feeling doesn't go away - nieces are way fun. We moved clear across the country to spend more time with ours!

Congratulations to you, Uncle Franklin. There's nothing quite like being an auntie or uncle. It's a wonderful job with so many perks, not the least of which is unconditional love without the burden of actual parenting. ;) And the spoiling... oh, the spoiling! :)

I am so happy for Susan. To be in labor that long and not get some good drugs, well, it's just amazing to think of her strength. As for me, I wanted all the drugs possible especially since insurance was paying.

I hope you get to see Abigail soon. Congratulations

Dammit. Baby pictures. New, fresh baby pictures. New, fresh babies are the best things in the entire world. The way they smell, the way they feel, the way they look at the world around them as if it is all so new and yet they've known its secrets for ages. Get thee to that baby, Uncle Franklin, and give it a fitting garment in which to reign over people's hearts.

    Congrats to all.

The best part of being an uncle is that you get to buy all the noisy toys for the niecephews!

And you've got an added bonus: You can now write "Dear Abby" letters -- and I'm sure she'll treasure them forever.
