Knitting, We Got Knitting

Tomten Jacket, BackAlong with all the flying too high with some guy in the sky and eating roast pork with a fork like a dork I managed to slip in a great deal of work on Abigail's Tomten Jacket. The body and hood are complete, leaving only the arms and trim to finish.

The jacquard motifs (the demonstration is coming) have been fun to chart and work. Between the Japonaisérie kimono and this piece, which in places resembles a Persian carpet, I seem to be in the midst of an Orientalist phase. My Lebanese blood rising to the surface, no doubt.

Perhaps at Christmas I'll present Abigail with a Baby's First Hookah from the Beirut branch of FAO Schwarz.

1,000 Knitters Update

I'm pleased as punch to announce not one but two more 1,000 Knitters shoots. I simply can't get enough.

October 13: Yarn Con Chicago

I'm delighted to have been asked to participate in Yarn Con, a gathering in Pulaski Park for yarn and those who love it. There will be workshops, demonstrations, and of course a vendor's market. The vendor list is interesting; it seems that this will be a chance for a lot of smaller and/or local producers and retailers to get their stuff out there.

For more information about the event, you can visit the Yarn Con Web site.

October 26: My Sister's Knits, Chicago

And then I'll be spending a very cozy Friday evening on October 26 from 5–8 p.m. at My Sister's Knits on the South Side. I'm a north sider, so this will be a great adventure for me. (I consider Hyde Park to be downstate.)These aren't all the shoots in the works, just the two confirmed. I'm hoping take advantage of several offers to travel outside the borders of Illinois soon.

Friendly

I just realized that I had switched off the function on Ravelry that tells me when somebody marks me as a friend. So if you did so and were met with apparent stony silence, that's why. It's not because I'm an uppity, mean snob. There are heaps of things I ignore because I'm an uppity, mean snob, but Ravelers aren't among them.

Rhinebeck Blogger Bingo

2007 Bingo ButtonI won't be at Rhinebeck, alas. But look who's been invited to be a spokesmodel for the second year in a row.

That darling Stitchy McYarnpants, who curates the Museum of Kitschy Stitches, has once again decided to host Rhinebeck Blogger Bingo. Complete, titillating details are here.

While I'm unspeakably bummed out that I won't be there, at least Dolores is getting legitimate work for a change. I asked her if there were any chance she might visit the shearing tent while she's out there and she said it depends on who's doing the shearing. Fine time for her to get fussy.

According to her whyewestillsingle.com profile, she's looking for:
  • large, firm hands;
  • medium-muscular to beefy builds;
  • an appreciation for the pleasures of the grape and grain;
  • a working knowledge of ancient Greek;
  • the manual finesse of a sculptor;
  • the stamina of a triathlete;
  • cute toes;
  • trust funds.
If you know of a shepherd with low morals who answers to this description I might get my #$%@^! roving at last.

Too bad Dolores won't be allowed a camera to take photos at Rhinebeck...LOTS of knitters there! (Though, Dolores behind a camera may be a "clothing optional" event!)

Ahem...are you sure it's Delores who is looking for those things...not you? It's a shame you won't be at Rhinebeck, bummer. Not that I will be either, but not for lack of desire.

omg, I just found your blog thru recommendations form my snb group and you are hilarious! I wish I had known you when I lived in Chicago and just started knitting! Yo might have already been, but Karen at Knit1 Chicago on Lincoln is awesome and soo nice, and I promise you won't have any bad LYS experiences there! Her husband owns the cafe next door and there are always groups of knitters in there, too!

I just hope our booth can handle another year of Dolores. You should have seen the place when she left last year!

Oh, and I friended you (I wonder what the OED has to say about using "friend" as a verb).

Anonymous said...

good to have you back!

any chance of philly being on your "1000 knitters" list of "places outside illinois"?

pretty please?

Eating roast pork with a fork like a dork? But, wait a minute, aren't you a vegetarian? Or am I confusing you with some other funny, insane stranger whose blog I read?

Anonymous said...

You seemed to get a bit "Dr. Suess-y" there for a moment.

I am sure that Dolores will manage to lead someone astray while she is in New York.

I'm originally from Indiana and grew up eating roast pork with a fork. Is this a Hoosier thing? I never realized it was unusual, it was just something we did.

Marie said...

Oh, I did the same stupid thing on Ravelry too! Thankfully someone left a message on one of my projects and said "well as you know you've got messaging turned off..." I only wish I was as smart as people assume I am!

Brilliant full circle! I had completely forgotten the genesis of the Dolores saga. Way to keep an eye on the narrative arc. :-)

Silly me.

I just figured, "Franklin's famous. And sought-after. And his ignoring my inconsequential little self on Ravlery? That's just part of the paprazzi-dodging, autograph-refusing, Greta Garbo kinda vibe he's living. It's enough to bask in the Franklinness. I don't need him to be my friend."

Dolores has already confided in me that she's planning to ditch Harry at one of the kid-activity booths with -- may I quote -- "some brat with cotton candy covered hands and a bad disposition" so that she can wend her way over to the local volunteer fire department to check their hoses...? Frightening, really...

Can't wait to see the finished tomten!

Damnit. My knowledge of ancient Greek is merely cursory.

Hope to see you at My Sister's... I've never been, and I can't imagine a better reason to trek to the south side (I, too, believe anything south of the loop is just too far).

I just finished a tomten for my niece but I wish I had been smart enough to come up with a neat little pattern in it... yours is just beautiful and I would be lying if I said I didn't have tomten envy.

How about Toronto for a 1000 Knitters stop over? Not so far from Chicago, plenty of lovely knitting stores, and lots of lovely knitters. I am sure we can find something for Delores to do if she wants to come up as well.

Ah, Franklin, I do "get a kick out of you!"

Rhinebeck (sigh). Now that is one thing to miss about living in upstate New York.

ROFL, it sounds like someone is very happy it's Friday -- you're in a very silly mood. Does this have anything to do with a certain someone we saw in a plane? That would be wonderful!!!! And about time too! You're quite a catch :)

I am totally bummed you can't make it to Rhinebeck too. That would be the place that I would be most likely to be able to make it to, if I were EVER to be able to meet you anywhere. Maybe next year??

And, that jacket is just darling! I sure hope Susan will allow us to see Abby wearing it! I think those colors are going to be just perfect for her too! I sure wish MY uncle knit!!

As others have so correctly said before me, bummer on Rhinebeck. I'll buy Dolores a glass of wine, though.

Beautiful Tomten!

I was very slow on the Ravelry thing, and am currently languishing at number 12000-something. If/when I get on my first move will be to try to get you to ignore me.

Hey' can we get you to come back to Hollywood for Christmas? We miss you here. And we have plenty of knitters all ready for photos ;-)

Love and Laughter,
Amy

I do think that Abigail will have the best knits of any baby since Meg Swansen.

I have been reading you for a year or so now, and am thrilled that the ONE day I'll be in Chicago this year, you are taking pictures! Sheesh, I thought my biggest expenses were going to be the theatre tickets and hotel; now I'm going to YarnCon? So much for the savings account...

Jenna said...

I hope this is okay... I added your blog to my list on my site (a non-knitting site, but as I have been drawn to the darkside and am in the process of falling pretty heavy into all things yarn based, I figured this was a good one to keep up with.) if its a problem, let me know and I'll yank the link.

Abigail's sweater is looking very pretty...and congrats on two more 1,000 Knitters shoots! And you can't be at Rhinebeck? Damn; my sympathies. (Oh goddess. Who the hell's gonna rein in Dolores?!)

As to her shearer specifications, tell her she'd better watch it. Plenty of us could do quite happily without ancient Greek, cute toes, and even the trust fund.

Ah, Dearling Knitterly Franklin, there's a delicious LYS called "Sow's Ear" just a few minutes from Madison WI ("63 miles surrounded by Reality") where you could have no END of fun, and we're just a mighty handsome crowd there -- heck, that's just a hop, skip and trot from the Windy. Think On't, monsieur!

Lorraine said...

Well, I "friended" you because not only are you a very talented artist, but I really wish there were more men that would stand up and be proud to say "I'm a Knitter".
Guys just need to get over it.

And no mistake- knitting is an art.

Delores showing her tatt makes me want to get another one.

and looking through you friends on Ravelry to see if i'm there yet lead me to laceweightguy....he's a good read.

Sob.

This not meeting thing is getting extremely ridiculous. If you come to Montréal, I swear I will make you croissants. Not kidding, and I haven't even done that for my husband since I first snagged him.

I'll even tuck the good chocolate into them.

YTT said...

I've got the ancient Greek - I volunteer to translate for any willing shepherd. ("Menin aide thea...")

I am also tagging Dolores for a meme on "Seven Things about Me." I'd love to hear what seven things about herself Dolores might care to name.

Oh, wow, that jaquard patterning on the Tomten jacket is looking really amazing! I can't wait to see how it's done.

Also, um, hi. I can't remember if I've ever commented on your blog before. But I really like it. And I just friended you on Ravelry.

Laiane said...

Damn you, Franklin, you owe me a keyboard! Coffee out the nose from laughing doesn't sound as painful as kristen's diet Coke out the nose from laughing, though, so I'll let it slide.

Baby's First Hookah! (snort, chortle)

Nice to read your entry.....
But........
Where is.......
TOM?
(and... can he cook?)

hmmmph. There you go flaunting your ravelry. I think there are still about 10K people in line ahead of me. Sigh.

Great! I'm so glad there are more 1000 knitters dates and that you are venturing to the south side!

Deborah C. said...

Ah, I'm so sorry you can't make it to Rhinebeck! I'll watch out for Dolores, though. The tomten is turning out beautifully - I can't wait to see the finished project.

Mein Gott in Himmel... Franklin, you are just on fire with hilarity in this post.

On. Fire.

Sweetie, if I knew a shepherd with loose morals who fit that description I'd never have time to read blogs!

Yvette said...

Oh she definitely is talking about an Aussie Shearer here - that Dolores, she has good taste!!

I happen to know a couple answering that very description............
